يشكل التاريخ الإسلامي المصدر الأساسي الذي تمتح منه الروائية رجاء بيطار مادتها الروائية في "يوميات طفلة من كربلاء" فتنطلق من واقعة تاريخية تروي فيها حياة السيد رقية بنت الإمام الحسين منذ النشأة وحتى الشهادة، وهي هنا تتخذ من المادة/الواقعة حدثاً هاماً هو واقعة (كربلاء) وتعمل على تأثيثها بالأحداث والتفاصيل والجزئيات، فتقدم لنا، رواية تاريخية، تختار مادتها من سيرة حياة أهل بيت النبوة عليهم السلام، وتعيد تصنيعها وفق مقتضيات الفن الروائي.
هذه الحكاية نسجتها رجاء محمج بيطار بنفس طويل وأدب كاتبة تحوك منمنماتها في ضوء بيت النبوة، فيتجسد خطاب روائي له مواصفاته على مستوى الأحداث والتقنيات واللغة، فعلى مستوى الأحداث ثمة تسلسل تاريخي وعلاقة سببية تؤدي إلى هذه النهاية "استشهاد الطفلة رقية"، وعلى مستوى التقنيات استخدمت الرواية تقنية الاستراجاع والتذكر، وبالأخص في عرضها الوقائع الدرامية التي رافقت رحلة شخصيات الرواية، فبدت الرواية كأنها سيرة ذاتية لكل شخصية من شخصياتها بما فيهم "رقية"، ولئن كانت الوقائع المروية متعاقبة في الغالب، زمنياً، فإن العلاقة بين الذكريات المستعادة-ما جرى لأهل البيت-بدت أكثر تعقيداً، ولعل هذا سببه أن الراوي للواقع راوياً واحداً هي الساردة التي تقمصت شخصية رقية وروت بلسانها الحكاية. أما اللغة التي يعتمدها الخطاب فهي لغة سردية، تنحو باتجاه الشاعرية، والمحمولات البلاغية والإنشائية، وتتسم بقدر كبير من السلاسة في التعبير، فجاء النص فريداً في موضوعه وحكايته وخطابه.
