تدور احداث الرواية حول أزمة الزواج والهوية مع التقدم بالعمر. تبدأ الرواية أحداثها برحلة زوجين عجوزين، هما أندرية ونيكول، من باريس إلى موسكو، وغاية الرحلة أن يزور الأب ابنته (ماشا) التي تعيش في موسكو. تطرح دوبوفوار أسئلة عميقة حول طبيعة الزواج وتغير شكل العلاقة مع العمر. فكم من الأزواج يبقون معاً بعد تجاوز سنّ معينة لسبب وحيد، أنه لا يمكنهم الانفصال؟ وكم تراود الأزواج مشاعر يخفيها الواحد عن الآخر. قد يتساءل الزوج: هل أحبتني زوجتي حقاً أم أنني مجرد عادة قديمة؟ والزوجة: ((ألم يكن بإمكاني الزواج من رجل أبرع وأنجح من زوجي)) .
