يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى معالجة علامات بارزة ومحطات واضحة في تشكيل الخطاب الشعري الجاهلي، وهي معالجة تسعى إلى إظهار التقنيات الأساسية التي يعتمدها الشاعر للتعبير عن إحساساته وأفكاره ورؤاه، فإذا عمد الشاعر إلى أسلوب ما فإنه يرى هذا الأسلوب قادر على حمل ما يريد أن يعبر عنه في رؤيته للحياة والوجود، فالفضاءات التي كان الشاعر يستشرفها عندما يقف أمام الطلل والموت والدهر واللون وغيرها من العناصر التي تصبغ رؤيته الشعرية التي يسعى إلى أن يعبر عنها استطاعت أن تكشف عن تفاعله مع موضوعه الشعري.
تناول الفصل الأول نماذج من الخطاب المجازي في الشعر الجاهلي، وهو خطاب يقوم على محاورة المكان والقلب والعين والنفس والجبل والحيوانات، وعالج الفصل الثاني جماليات اللون في شعر زهير بن أبي سلمى، معتمداً في ذلك على الإرتباط الوثيق والجوهري بين الشعر والفنون الأخرى.
وناقش الفصل الثالث: البناء الإستعاري للدهر في الشعر الجاهلي، وكشف الفصل الرابع عن البناء الإستعاري للحرب في الشعر الجاهلي، ويتناول الفصل الخامس النقد ونقد النقد، قراءة في البنيوية وتطبيقاتها على الشعر الجاهلي.
