نال مُصطلح العلمانيّة في القرنين الأخيرين حيزاً واسعاً من المُتابعة والاهتمام على الصعيد العالمي، وتنوعت المواقف بشأنه بين المُؤيِّد والمُساند والرافض والمُعارض. وقد وصل هذا المصطلح إلينا مع بداية عصر النهضة العربيّة، فشكّل مادةً دسمة للنقاش والجدال والتداول في عالمنا العربي، فتبناه البعض كمدخل لتطوير المُجتمعات العربية، بينما هاجمه البعض الآخر مُعتبراً إياه حالة مُنافسة للدين، فأقحِمَت العلمانيّة بذلك في مُواجهة مُعقّدة وفي نقاش بعيد عن جوهر أهدافها الحقيقية وعن مضمون الإصلاحات السياسيّة التي تُقدِّمُها.
إنّ البلدان العربيّة، أكانت تلك المُتخبّطة في تجاذبات مَذهبية وعرقيّة، أو تلك المُرتهنة لسلطات ديكتاتورية، أو تلك الخاضعة لتدخّلات دُولٍ ذي مَطامع سياسية واقتصادية في شؤونها، هي أحوج ما تكون اليوم إلى أنظمة تُحرِّر الإنسان من كل أشكال التمييز وتُساوي بين الأفراد وتستحدِث السبل الأفضل لتحسين حياتهم وتأمين الراحة والحماية المدنيّة لهم، وبالتالي فهي أحوج ما تكون إلى أنظمة مَدنيّة علمانية.
إنطلاقاً من هذه الرؤية يُجيب الكاتب باسل عبدالله في كتابه "العلمانية بين التحليل والتحريم (في لبنان والعالم العربي) على عدّة أسئلة مطروحة حول العلمانية والطائفية وتاريخ العلمانية وعلاقتها بالديانتين المسيحية والاسلامية وبالسلطات الدينية وبالإيمان بالله، وموقف العلمانيين من ظاهرة ارتداء الحجاب ومن مسألة تداول الأفلام ورسوم الكاريكاتير والكتب المُنتقدة والمُسيئة للأديان، وموقفها من التطرّف الديني ومن الإلحاد، وعلاقتها بالطبقيّة، ونظرتها إلى الأماكن المقدسة، كما يُحدد الفرق بين الدولة العلمانية والدولة المدنية ويحدد أيضاً المحاور الأساسيّة لبناء الدولة العلمانيّة، والعوائق التي تقف أمام تبني وتطبيق العلمانية في العالم العربي. بتضمن الكتاب 30 سؤالاً وجواباً، كما يعرض في ملحق تجربة حراك إسقاط النظام الطائفي في لبنان.
