هذا الرجل البحاثة العبقري "فولني" الذي جاء الشرق في أواخر القرن الثامن عشر، لم يأته كسائر رحالي الفرنجة الذين تدافعوا إليه على التوالي بسائقة الفضول، مشغوفين بصوفيته الغامضة، وروحانيته المبهمة الغائمة.
بل لعله انطلق إليه بقصد معين ومهمة أناطتها به حكومته عهدئذ لإستطلاع أحوال السلطنة العثمانية في ذلك الشطر من العالم الذي ما برح مطمح الفاتحين ومحط أطماعهم منذ أقدم العصور والأزمنة.
على أن الذي يعنينا من الأمر، وقد انقضت على رحلة هذا العالم الكبير مائة وست وستون سنة، أن تستجلي، على ضوء معلوماته الدقيقة ومباحثه الرصينة، حقبة من تاريخنا الحديث أصبحت، على قرب عهدنا بها، محاطة باحجبة الشك والإبهام، وتكاد تطفو على حقيقتها الأظانين والأساطير، فقد خالط هذا الرحالة السكان وعايشهم وشافههم بمعزل عن التراجمة لأنه تعلم لغتهم وأتقنها كتابة ومكالمة.
وتوغل في أطراف البلاد وأقاصيها، وألمّ بعاداتها وشرائعها، واستطلع دخائلها، فضاف رهبانها ومشايخها، وحلّل طبائع رجالها، وتسلل بالدرس إلى إخدار نسائها بما عرفه عنهن من الفرنجيات المقيمات في البلاد، فلم تخف عنه شاردة ولا فاتته خفية، بل يدهشك أن تراه، وهو الأجنبي الفرنسي، قد سبر غور تلك الأصقاع الشرقية، وكشف النقاب عن أحوال وأخلاق وشيم وعادات دقت معرفتها على مؤرخي ذلك العصر الذي كانت تسوده العنصرية الذميمة وتتحكم في مقدراته عصبية الدين والطائفة والمذهب... وها نحن نفتح دفتي كتابه أمام قراء العربية.
