صنف الباحثون فلسفة ميشيل فوكو، تصنيفات عديدة منها التصنيف النبوي، وما بعد البنيوي، والبنيوية، وما بعد الحداثة. واصطلح هو على فلسفته بمصطلحات الأركيولوجيا، والجينالوجيا، وأخيراً الأنطولوجيا التاريخية. فهل هناك علاقة بين هذه المصطلحات؟-يتساءل مؤلف الكتاب-وهل تعبر عن مراحل مختلفة في مسيرة الفيلسوف؟ وإذا كانت كذلك فهل تعبر عن انقطاع أم عن تحول؟ وأخيراً ما هي هذه الأنطولوجيا التاريخية؟ وما علاقتها بمختلف المراحل الفكرية لميشيل فوكو...؟
ليس الغاية من هذه التساؤلات، أن يضيف المؤلف، تصنيفاً جديداً، بل الغاية "إيجاد الخط الناظم لهذه الفلسفة، والمسار الذي يعبر عن هذه الفلسفة ويسمح بدراسة علاقتها بالتنوير"، وبتعبير آخر يحاول المؤلف تقديم قراءة نقدية جديدة لهذه الفلسفة وفق مقاربة تاريخية لمسارها ومواضيعها وإشكالاتها، وذلك من خلال موقفها من التنوير الذي كان الموضوع الرئيسي لفلسفة فوكو.
ولكن، لا يمكن فهم النظري للفيلسوف فوكو من مسألتي (التنوير والثورة)، ما لم تتم دراسة النصين الذين قدمهما الفيلسوف في مناسبتين مختلفتين، دراسة تحليلية ونقدية، ويعني بذلك المؤلف: النص الذي قدمه فوكو بالجمعية الفلسفية الفرنسية في العام 1978 (ما النقد؟ النقد والتنوير)، ونص آخر درسه بالكوليج دوفرنس في العام 1983، وتعزيزاً لهذه الدراسة، قام المؤلف بترجمة هذين النصين إلى اللغة العربية، ومعهما مجموعة من النصوص والحوارات التي تبين جوانب مهمة من فلسفة ميشيل فوكو الفيلسوف الذي يعدّ وجهاً بارزاً في الفلسفة المعاصرة وبخاصة أنها تؤرخ لبداية ونهاية مساره الفلسفي، وتشتمل على مواضيع في الجنون، والمجتمع، والبنيوية والتاريخ، والأخلاق والجمال، وغيرها... هذا، وختم الكتاب بحوار عن (المثقفون والسلطة) بين ميشيل فوكو وجيل دلوز.
