يقول بهروز غمري تبريزي إن النقاد مخطئون، ذلك أن ميشيل فوكو قد أدرك أن الإيرانيين كانوا على عتبة وقطيعة في تاريخ الثورات العالمي وكانوا يدشنون عهداً يجعل من التفكير في الكرامة والعدالة والحرية خارج الخرائط والمبادئ المعرفية للتنوير الأوروبي أمراً ممكناً، حتى وإن أخفقت الثورة عملياً في تحقيق ذلك.
لا يركز هذا الكتاب على كتابات ميشيل فوكو الخاصة بالثورة والتي كتبتها للصحيفة الإيطالية كورير دلا سيرا فحسب، بل يركز أيضاً على الأثر العميق الذي تركه الحدث في محاضراته اللاحقة حول الأخلاق والروحانية والكلام المحرر، مما جعل الأحداث المعاصرة منذ 11 سبتمبر، والحرب على الإرهاب، والإنتفاضات العربية مقالات فوكو عن الثورة الإيرانية أكثر صلة من أي وقت مضى.
يوضح غمري - تبريزي كيف رأى فوكو في الثورة مثالاً على فلسفته المضادة للفلسفة: فقد كانت نسبة له حدثاً لا يتناسب مع الخطابات المعيارية التقدمية للتاريخ.
سيثير هذا العمل متعدد التخصصات، المتطور نظرياً والغني تجريبياً، نقاشاً حيوياً حول إصراره على أن ما أبلغت به كتابات فوكو لم يكن محاولة لفهم الإسلاموية، بل إقتناعه بأن عقلانية التنوير لم تغلق باب الإحتمالات غير المعروفة للمجتمعات البشرية.
فوكو في إيران دعوة شجاعة ومثيرة للتفكير لفهم الثورة الإيرانية، وقد رد فوكو عليها بطريقة أصيلة، إنه عمل رائع يتجاوز الثنائيات البسيطة، ولا يتعاطف مع المفردات المبتذلة التي يستخدمها التقدميون لوصف هذه الأحداث - أو لإنتقاد فوكو بسبب إضفاء الطابع الرومانسي المزعوم على الثورة الإيرانية.
