نظراً لما يتسم به الخطاب الصوفي من خصائص تتصل باختلاف درجات قراءته تقبّلاً وتأويلاً، من جهة، وبلغته الإشارية المجازية من جهة أخرى، فإنه غالباً ما يتمظهر خطاباً منغلقاً لا ينقاد بسهولة لغير "العارف". وفي هذا الإطار، واعتباراً لما لمسألة ضبط مصطلحات الخطاب الصوفي من دور أساسي في استجلاء كنهه وتبديد كثافته الإستعارية والتأويلية، فإننا نرى تدبّر الرمز الصوفي لا يبدو منعزلاً عن المجاز والتصوير الإستعاري والنشاط التخييلي بشكل عام. وتحيل الرمزية الشعرية – من حيث هي استقطاب للمتقابلات – على كونها فردية ومتعالية.
إن اختيارنا الرمز الصوفي أُساً لبحثنا مرده وعينا بقيمته في التجرية الصوفية نشأة ومساراً وتقبلاً ووجوداً، ليس هذا فحسب، بل إنه يكتنز التجربة برمّتها فيجعلها حيّة نابضة بحسب الآفاق التي تدرسه وتتدبّره، وعليه حصرنا اهتمامنا في جانبين إثنين هما: الإغراب بداهة والإغراب قصداً، الأول بحثنا فيه مبررات الغموض والإغراب بما هي لازمة ومبرّرة وبها ايضاً بدا الخطاب ممكن التأويل. الثاني بحثنا فيه الخطاب وقد أُلغز وطُلسم بل وعُتم عليه، فصار بموجب ذلك ممتنع التأويل. وهنا انفتح الفهم على أبواب كثيرة بما يعبّر عن حيرة القارىء وغربة الصوفي واستغلاق أسراره.
هي إذن مباحث متداخلة جمعت بين الرغبة في البوح إذ الحب لا طاقة للصوفي على كتمانه والرغبة في الستر ولا طاقة للصوفي على ذلك ايضاً. وبين الوازعين الضديدين وما انجرّ عنهما وتفرع من مسائل، توزع عملينا على خمسة أبواب، أولها تأصيل للرمز الصوفي لغة واصطلاحاً والنظر في صلاته بالرمز الأدبي ثم تدبّر لخصائصه ... أما الثاني فصنّفنا فيه أهم طرائق الرمز [ حروفية، عددية، خمرية، غزلية، رموز العبادات ...] واعتبرنا الرموز تقاطعاً بين معايشة التجربة والإخبار بها وهي بمثابة الأجنة تنمو باجتهادات القراء المتعاقبين. الباب الثالث بحثنا فيه الإغراب لغة واصطلاحاً. أما الباب الرابع فخصصناه لتقصّي جميع مظاهر القصدية في إغراب الرمز الصوفي. والباب الخامس كان مداره التحوّل من الرمز إلى النص المعمّى، فبحثنا مفهوم التعمية فالتقصّد في التعمية فطرائق التعمية وخلصنا إلى تمحّض الرمز الصوفي طلسماً سحرياً تخليقاً لخطاب جديد.
