نظراً لما يتسم به الخطاب الصوفي من خصائص تتصل باختلاف درجات قراءته تقبّلا وتأويلا، من جهة، وبلغته الإشارية المجازية من جهة أخرى، فإنّه غالبا ما يتمظهرُ خطابا منغلقا لا ينقاد بسهولة لغير "العارف". في هذا الإطار، واعتباراً لما لمسألة ضبط مصطلحات الخطاب الصوفي من دور أساسي في استجلاء كنهه وتبديد كثافته الاستعارية والتأويلية، فإنّنا نرى تدبّر الرّمز الصّوفي لا يبدو منعزلا عن المجاز والتّصوير الاستعاري والنّشاط التّخييليّ بشكل عامّ. وتحيل الرّمزيّة الشّعريّة -من حيث هي استقطاب للمتقابلات- على كونها فرديّة ومتعاليّة.
وإنّه على خلاف الرّمز الأدبيّ تأخّر طور نضج الرّمز الصّوفي واكتماله حتّى القرن الثّالث للهجرة وما بعده. ذلك أنّ الصّوفيّة لم يشغلهم في القرنين الأوّلين التّعبيرَ الفنيّ عن تجاربهم بقدر ما شغلهم المصطلح اللّفظيّ الذي يُدلون به عن أحوالهم ومقاماتهم ومواجيدهم، ووضع القواعد السّلوكيّة التي تُحقّق للصّوفي درجة الكمال الرّوحيّ.
هي إذن عملية تأويلية تحاول أن ترتفع بواقع حركية اللغة بتلك التعريفات الواردة عن طريق مجموعة من الذوات، من كونها مجرد علامات اجتماعية أو نسقية، قد تكون مفتوحة أو مغلقة إلى كونها رموزا أكثر تعقيدا وكثافة من العلامات أو المداليل. ومن أجل فك مثل هذا النوع من التعقيد الرمزي لا بدّ من تحقّق تصور عام وشامل لحركية الوجود المطلق من جهة، ثم عالم الذات الإنسانية بكل نواميسه الداخلية والخارجية من جهة أخرى. في هذه الحالة قد يُتخيّل للناظر أو المتتبع لمثل هذه الطريقة أنّ الذات الإنسانية يسهل عليها بأن ترقى باحتمالاتها وهي تتعامل مع المعطى المعرفي إلى مستوى اليقين.
