سمّي المكان بـ"البحيرة المرصودة"، لأن الضباب كان يلفّه ليلاً، فيتيه فيه المسافرون. "جرمان" و "ماري" والصغير "بيار" ضلّوا الطريق، واضطروا الى قضاء الليل هناك. فاستولى الحزن على الفلاح "جرمان" والشابة الصغيرة. فهو يقصد "أورمو" بحثاً عن زوجة له، تهتم بأطفاله اليتامى و "ماري" ستعمل راعية أجيرة في احدى مزارع "أورمو". وحده "بيار" الصغير كان سعيداً وواثقاً بنفسه. فمصير من أحبّهما حباً جماً متوقف عليه.
