إن الغاية من وضع النواميس والأديان، وبعثة الأنبياء هو هداية الإنسان والسمو به إلى مصاف سامية وذلك لا يكون إلا بالتخلي عن ذمائم الأخلاق ورذائلها، والتحلي بشرائف الصفات وفضلها. ومحمد مهدي التراقي يسعى في هذا الكتاب في أجزائه الثلاثة إلى إيراد زبدة ما أورده أهل العرفان والحكمة في مجال علم الأخلاق وذلك ليكون للطالب دليلاً لإصلاح النفس وتهذيب الأخلاق، حيث جاء في مضمونه ليكون سبيلاً لجمع السعادات. وقد رتبه على ثلاثة أبواب ضمّنها بحثاً متوسطاً عن النفس وقواها، والخير والسعادة، والفضائل والرذائل، في البابين الأول والثاني، وجعل أساس تقسيمه للكتاب على القوى الثلاث: العاقلة والشهوية والغضبية، معللاً ذلك بأن "جميع الفضائل والرذائل لا تخرج عن التعلق بالقوى الثلاث".
وذكر كل قوة ما يتعلق بها من أجناس الفضائل والرذائل منفردة ومنضمّة إلى الأخرى. ثم ذكر أنواعها واستقصى ذكر الأنواع مطبقاً على كل نوع نظرية الوسط والأطراف، فجاء في استقصائه وإلحاقه كل فضيلة ورذيلة بالقوى التي تتعلق بها، بما لم يجيء به غيره ولم يسبقه إليه أحد. وهذه أهم ناحية فنية في الكتاب، وفتح جديد في تحقيق منشأ حدوث خلق الفضيلة والرذيلة، لو اتفق لغيره أن يترسم خطاه، ويتم ما فتحه من هذا الباب من التحقيق، لتقدم على يديه علم الأخلاق كبيراً.
