من أهم ما يؤاخذ به كتابنا هذا، اعتماده على المراسيل في الأحاديث، وتسجيل كل ما يرى أمامه من المنقولات: غثها وسمينها، من دون إشارة إلى التمييز ولا إلى المصادر، حتى نقل كثيراً عن إحياء العلوم.
وتعمد النقل عن مثل جامع الأخبار ومصباح الشريعة، اللذين يشهد أسلوبهما على وضع أكثر ما فيهما.
وقد وجدنا صعوبة كبيرة في العثور على جملة من مصادر هذه المنقولات لتصحيحها، وقد يستغرق البحث للعثور على مصدر خبر واحد أياماً، كما قد يذهب البحث سدى.
وما كان يهمنا من الرجوع إلى المصادر إلا تصحيح المنقولات لا إثبات مصادرها، فلذلك لا نشير في الحاشية إلى المصادر إلا إذا وجدنا إختلافاً في نصه في النسخ، فنقول: صححناه على كذا مصدر، وبهذه المناسبة لا بد من الإعتراف بالجميل، فنذكر الأستاذ الفاضل السيد عبد الرزاق المقرم بالشكر لما أعاننا عليه من الفحص عن بعض الروايات.
والذي يهون الخطب في هذه المؤاخذة - على أن لها قيمتها الفنية - أنها لا تختص بهذا الكتاب وحده من بين كتب الأخلاق الإسلامية، بل هذا ديدنها، وكأن همّ أصحابها من الإستشهاد بالمنقولات نفس أداء الفكرة فإذا كانت بحسب نظرهم صحيحة مقبولة في نفسها فلا يجب عندم ان يكون الحديث الذي يتضمنها صحيحاً مقبولاً في عرف أهل الحديث، فإذا قال المحدث: "قال النبي والإمام كذا"، يعني ذلك أن هذا القول ثابت بالنقل الصحيح الموثوق به، وإلا فيقول "روي عنه كذا" أو ما يشبه ذلك أما الأخلاقي فلا يعني بذلك القول إلا أنه مروي عنه بأي طريق كان.
