يعتبر هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا ، على ما تضمنه من نصوص متقدمة ، أهم مصادر تاريخ السلاجقة ، وأقدم كتاب جامع لتاريخ الدولة السلجقية ، وأصولها ، وسلاطينها ، ورجال إدارتها من وزراء ، ورؤساء للدواوين ، وكتّاب للدولة ، إضافة إلى اهتمامه بوظائف الدولة المختلفة ، وإنجازاتها العسكرية ، والإدارية ، والسياسية ، والإجتماعية والإقتصادية ، والعمرانية ، وعلاقاتها بالقوى السياسية الإسلامية ، وغير الإسلامية ، وتفرّده بالحديث عن خواتينها ( زوجات السلاطين ) ، والإدارة التابعة لهن ، والدور الرسمي وغير الرسمي الذي قمن به في الدولة .
وتبدو فائدة الكتاب وأهميته واضحة جلية في أصالة مادته التي لم يسبقه في الكثير منها أحد قبله ، وتفرّده بالكثير من الأخبار والأشعار ، والتراتيب الإدارية التي لم يذكرها غيره ، إضافة إلى أنه أنموذج سامقٌ لطرائق الترجمة من اللغة الفارسية إلى العربية ، وأنموذج دالّ على أدب ولغة الفترة السلجقية ، مما جعله مصدراً لكل من كتب عن تلك الدولة من القدماء والمحدثين .
كما تنبع أهمية هذا الكتاب من قيمة مؤلّفيه ، حيث أن الكتاب في أصله للوزير أنوشروان بن خالد القاشاني ، وكتب فيه مشاهداته عن الدولة ، وترجمه وأكمله وأضاف عليه العماد الأصفهاني ، وهو أشهر أدباء وعلماء ومؤرخي العالم الإسلامي في النصف الثاني من القرن السادس الهجري ، الذي صنّف في علوم شتى ، لعلّ أبرزها تواريخ السلجقية والزنكية والأيوبية ، وتواريخ الأدباء .
