إذا كان الاتصال Communication هو عملية تفاعل تتم بغرض تبادل المعلومات والأفكار والحاجات والرغبات في عملية تفاعلية تتطلب وجود اللغة Language باعتبارها شفرة Code اجتماعية مشتركة ونسقًا لتمثيل المفاهيم باستخدام مجموعة من الرموز العفوية وترابطات مختلفة لتلك الرموز وفقًا لقواعد معينة، فإن عملية الاتصال تتضمن الانصات، والتحدث، والقراءة، والكتابة حيث يرتكز التعلم الأكاديمي على هذا الاتصال اللغوي المركب. وإذا كانت الدراسات تؤكد اقتران اللغة بالاستخدام الاجتماعي الذي يحققه الفرد عن طريق الاتصال الفعال في شئونه المختلفة، فإن اللغة هي التي تقوم بوظيفة التعبير عن الفكرة والاتصال والتواصل بين الناس، وهي بذلك ظاهرة اجتماعية تخلقها طبيعة الاجتماع وتنبعث من الحياة الاجتماعية ومقتضياتها. وتنبع أهمية هذا الكتاب من الدور الذي تقوم به اللغة الشفهية في الموقف الاتصالية الحياتية، وأثر ذلك على النمو العام للفرد في النواحي النفسية، والاجتماعية، والتربوية، واللغوية وذلك من خلال الحد من صعوبات تعلم اللغة الشفهية في مواقف الاتصال المختلفة في مرحلة مبكرة، حيث تؤثر هذه الصعوبات بشكل مباشر أو غير مباشر على التحصيل الدراسي، والتكيف النفسي والاجتماعي للفرد.
