للخط العربي نشأة تاريخية تكشف عن إبداعاته، غير أن القدماء لم يبحثوا في هذه النشأة، بل كانت دراساتهم تنطلق من أن الحرف العربي بصورته التي وصلت إليهم إنما وضع على هذه الصورة وحديثاً، جاءت بعض الدراسات التي تناولت تلك الأصول التاريخية للخط العربي ولكن مؤلفوها لم يدخلوا في صلب سيمياء الخط لسد هذا النقص.
جاءت الدراسات في هذا الكتاب لتخدم جانب النظام السيميائي للكتابة العربية، وهي نمط من الدرسات التاريخية المقارنة التي تضع في حسابها عن إمكان الربط بين شكل الحرف العربي والشكل السينياني والكنعاني، مع أخذ المؤلف بعين الاعتبار أن الخط رمزي إلى أبعد الحدود، ولكنه يرى أنه وصل إلى هذه الرمزية عبر سلسلة من الحلقات التاريخية الحضارية التي تحمل سمات الأمم التي كتبت لغاتها قبل العربية بزمن ليس يسيراً. وينبغي الإشارة إلى أن هذه الدراسة قد أعدت تصوراً لنظام العلامات في الأحرف المشتركة بين العربية وغيرها.
