شهدت الدولة المملوكية الثانية (784-922هـ) نبوغ الكثيرين من أعلام الثقافة والفكر؛ وكان من بينهم المؤرخون الذين اكتسبوا مكانة فائقة بين المسهمين في الفكر العرب الإسلامي المشكلين لمادته. ويُعد "ابن الملقن" لدى من ترجموه أعجوبة في كثرة التأليف، فلقد كان مشتغلاً بالتصنيف وهو شاب، مما جعله أكثر معاصريه تصنيفاً، بحيث قدرت مؤلفاته بنحو ثلاثمائة مجلد، وهي في معظمها تخريجات وشروح، ومختصرات، واعتراضات لما اشتهر في عصره من مؤلفات في الحديث النبوي، والفقه، واللغة، والأدب... بالإضافة إلى ذلك كان مؤرخاً جامعاً بين الكتابة التاريخية وبين الفروع المتنوعة من صنوف المعرفة.
وفي هذا الكتاب دراسة تحليلية لحياة ابن الملقن وفيها يكشف المؤلف عن أشهر مؤلفاته التأريخية وهي "طبقات الأولياء"، "العقد المذهب في طبقات حملة المذهب"، "نزهة النظار في قضاة الأمصار".
