على الرغم من ولع "الزركشي" بالتدوين التاريخي، وكتابته فيه، فإنه قد أسقط لدي الباحثين المحدثين من جانب المؤرخين، وأغفل دراسة الجانب التاريخي من مؤلفاته، ربما لغلبة جانبي "الفقه" و "المحدث" عليه، واشتهاره بهما. ولذا فإن هذا البحث الذي نقلب صفحاته قد جاء مركزاً على دراسة وإبراز جانب المؤرخ لدى "الزركشي" اعتمادا على الدراسة المنهجية لمؤلفه "عقود الجمان على وفيات الأعيان" باعتباره الأثر الوحيد للزركشي المقتصر فيه على الكتابة التاريخية دون سواها، مع التنبيه على ما انتثر من فوائد وفصول تاريخية في كثير من مؤلفاته الأخرى، الداخلة في مجالي الحديث والفقه.
ولقد انقسم هذا البحث إلى بابين اثنين، عُني في أولهما بالكشف عن بيئة الزركشي، المكانية والزمانية، بكل ما فيها من ظروف سياسية واقتصادية واجتماعية وفكرية، بالإضافة إلى الترجمة له، حيث أشير إلى اسمه، ولقبه، ومذهبه، والإرهاصات الأولى لتكوينه الفكري ورحلاته داخل القطر المصري وخارجه، والعلوم التي نبغ فيها... بينما ُعني في ثانيهما بالكشف عن منهجه في الكتابة التاريخية، من خلال أربعة فصول يمكن إجمالها في الفصل الأول: الخطة العامة للكتاب، وفيه عرف بمخطوطي الكتاب، وحقق عنوانه، وأشير إلى محتواه وتنظيمه، والنسق التعبيري المصاحب لمادته، الفصل الثاني: خصص لدراسة طبيعة الكتاب وأسس انتقاء مادته. الفصل الثالث: مصادر مادة الكتاب، الفصل الرابع: النقد التاريخي في الكتاب.
