"ابن حجر العسقلاني" علم من ابرز علماء عصره، الذين اتسعت معارفهم وتخصصاتهم فدخلوا في نطاق الموسوعيين (أصحاب الجمع التأليفي) إذا ما ضُم تراثهم الذي خلفوه بعضه إلى بعض. فقد أسهم في كتابة التاريخ، والأدب، والشعر، والحديث والفقه والتفسير... وغيرها، مما أدخله في نطاق المؤرخين، والأدباء، والشعراء والمحدثين... قياساً بما خلف من دراسات قائمة على الأصالة والعمق. ولكن نتيجة لغلبة جانب المحدث لدى "ابن حجر" على غيره من الجوانب التي نبغ فيها فإن الكثيرين ممن عنوا بالتعريف بالحركة الفكرية في ظل الدولة المملوكية قد أثبتوه في جانب المحدثين، إهمالاً له في جانب المؤرخين. لذا اتجه المؤلف محمد كمال عز الدين، إلى إبراز جانب المؤرخ لدى ابن حجر من خلال هذا البحث الذي أسس على بابين اثنين، خصص أولهما للترجمة لابن حجر، بينما خصص ثانيهما للتعرف على منهجه في الكتابة التاريخية من خلال دراسة مادة كتابة "أنباء الغمر بأنباء العمر" باعتباره أهم ما خلف في هذا المجال من مؤلفات تاريخية.
