يأتي هذا الكتاب للإضاءة على حياة ومؤلفات "عبد الباسط الحنفي (844-920ه – 1440-1514م) وهو أحد أهم المؤرخين الموسوعيين أصحاب الجمع التأليفي.
وتنقسم الدراسة إلى بابين اثنين، خصّ أولهما بالترجمة له: هو "زين الدين، أبو المكارم، عبد الباسط بن خليل بن شاهين، الشيخي، الحنفي" من مدينة ملطية في أطراف آسيا الصغرى. أما عن حياته: فقد عاش حياته متنقلاً بين طرابلس ودمشق والقدس والحجاز والقاهرة. وكان حافظاً للقرآن الكريم وبعض مختصرات علوم عصره قبل منظومة النسفي، والكنز، والمجمع، عارضاً لها ولغيرها من المؤلفات في الفقه الحنفي، والمنطق والبيان وعلم الكلام ...
أما الباب الثاني فيأتي في مجهودات عبد الباسط الحنفي في الكتابة التأريخية، ويتألف من فصول خمسة يبحث الفصل الأول في مؤلفاته فقد كانت له مقطوعات شعرية، وشروح أو مؤلفات مستقلة في الفقه الحنفي والطب، أما مؤلفاته التاريخية فالمعروف منها ستة نذكر منها 1- تاريخ الأنبياء الأكابر وبيان أولي العزم منهم. أما الفصل الثاني فهو دراسة لمؤلفه (الروض الباسم في حوادق العمر والتراجم). ثم الفصل الثالث وهو دراسة لمحتوى كتابه (غاية السؤل في سيرة الرسول). ويأتي الفصل الرابع حول معجم في ترجمات أعيان عصره وهو: (المجمع الفنن بالمعجم المعنون). وأخيراً الفصل الخامس وهو دراسة لنسخة خطية عنونت بإسم (نزهة الأساطين في من ولي مصر من السلاطين) ثم خاتمة الكتاب ونصوص مختارة من كتابات "عبد الباسط الحنفي" التاريخية.
