يبدو الشاعر محمود صبح في "ديوان قبل .. أثناء .. بعد" مسكوناً بالأصوات والتأمل الروحي، وقد يأتي هذا التفرد من خلال شغف الشاعر بالحياة الروحية التي تسكنه منذ أكثر من خمسين عاماً، فهو في هذا الديوان يستدرج عدداً من رموزه الشعرية التي تستظل بها عبارته الشعرية وتشكل خلالها قيمات تشكيلية وفنية ودلالية وصوتية تثري المعنى الداخلي الذي يترشح عن ظلال اللغة، ويؤسس لعلاقة جدلية بين الكلمة وإحساس الشاعر. إن القيم الدلالية التي تشكل ظهير الخطاب في تجربة الشاعر وعبر رحلته في الحياة هي ما يسعى إلى إشاعتها من خلال الأسلوب الفني للنص المكتوب. أليس هو القائل "لا يستطيع الشعر أن يحلق إلا بأجنحته الأربع معاً، وهذه الأجنحة هي: الفكرة والصورة والعبارة والنغمة".
"آن لهذه القصيدة أن تنبثقَ / فقد هيأتُ لها كلَ شيء: / مداداً أحمر، / ريشة حادةً / ورقاً أصفر، / يداً مرتجفةً / أيها البيت الشعري الذي يمكث في ذاتي منقوشاً، / أنتَ لي إلى الأبدِ / ولتذهب الأشعار الأخرى إلى الفناء".
يضم الديوان قصائد في الشعر العربي الموزون والمقفى، والشعر العامودي، والشعر العربي الحديث، كتبها الشاعر في أعوام مختلفة؛ وفازت بعدة جوائز؛ تندرج في الكتاب تحت ثلاثة عناوين رئيسة هي: 1- بيان الحيَيَوِيَّةِ ، 2- قصائد أندلسية ، 3- قصائد إسبانية.
