إن جميع الأئمة المجتهدين من السلف الصالح في القرون الثلاثة الأولى، وأتباعهم من العلماء والأولياء، مجمعون على جواز التوسل إلى الله تعالى بأسمائه وصفاته، وبصالح العمل الذي أخلص فيه صاحبه لله وابتغى به وجهه الكريم. وأجمعوا أيضاً على جواز التوسل إليه سبحانه بجاه أنبيائه وأوليائه، وبما اختصهم الله تعالى به من النبوة والولاية، ولم يخالف في جواز ذلك أحد ممن يقتدي بهم من الأئمة والعلماء، وشذ عن ذلك بعض المسلمين من مدعي العلم والحديث، ولا يعتد بقولهم ولا يلتفت إليه، بل يضرب به عرض الحائط، لأنه مخالف للأدلة من الكتاب والسنة والاجماع.
وقد ذكر العلماء والأئمة جواز التوسل وأدلته في الكتب الفقهية على أنه مسألة من مسائل الفقه، إلى أن ظهرت فرقة من المبتدعة في العقائد اقتدوا بسلفهم من المعتزلة والكرامية والمجسمة والمشبهة، فأدخلوا مسألة التوسل في مباحث العقيدة، وكفروا أئمة المسلمين من أحل الحق الأشاعرة والماتردية وأتباعهم من العلماء، وفسقوا وبدعوا الأمة الإسلامية المتبعة للأئمة من السلف الصالح، واعتبروا أنفسهم الفرقة الناجية، وحكموا على بقية المسلمين أنهم من أهل النار، وتستر هؤلاء المدعون للعلم تارة، وللحديث تارة أخرى خلف شعر "الكتاب والسنة"، ولبسوا على جهلة الناس وعوامهم دعوتهم فأظهروا الحق بمظهر الباطل، والباطل بمظهر الحق، وادعوا السلفية أولاً، والواسطية ثانياً، والتجديد ثالثاً. فتعين على أهل الحق أن يدافعوا عن العقيدة وأصولها، وأن يظهروا أدلتهم على أحقيتها، لينفوا عنها تحريف هؤلاء وتأويلهم وغلوهم. وفي هذا الكتاب رسالة مختصر تلخص لأقوال العلماء في هذا الموضوع وتسرد الأدلة والبراهيم من الكتاب والسنة والاجماع.
