إن الباعث على تأليف هذه الرسالة التي بين أيدينا هو أن كثيراً من عامَّة المسلمين لم يفرِّقوا في أبواب الإبتداع بين ما هو بدعة إعتقادية مكفِّرة أو مُفَسِّقة وبين ما هو بدعة عملية، ولم يفرِّقوا بين السُنَن السيئة، وبين البدعة اللُّغَوية والبدعة الشرعية، مما حمل الكثير منهم على الوقوع فيما لم يؤذن به شرعاً، ظناً منهم أنه من قبيل السنن الحسنة، أو الأعراف المعتبرة، مع أنه ليس منها.
كما أن كثيراً ممَّن كتب في هذا الموضوع كتاب كتابته فوق مستوى العامة من طلبة العلم، أو كان متحيِّزاً إلى فئةٍ ما، فهو يحاول تطبيق القواعد وصياغتها حسب مفهوم تلك الفئة الذي تبناه ذلك الكاتب مذهباً له، مع نبذه ما سواه ممَّا عند الآخرين ممَّا هو مشتمل على وجوه من الحق وتحتمله الأدلة والنصوص.
وبناءً عليه، كتب الشيخ عبد الهادي محمد الخرسة، خريج جامعة الأزهر، هذه الرسالة لينصح بها الشباب ويبين الفرق بين السّنن الحسنة والسّنن السيئة.
