الرموز الصوفية هي في قسم كبير منها مصطلحاتٌ تعارف عليها المتصوفة فيما بينهم للحفاظ على أسرارهم. وقد ورد عند الطوسي: إن أدب أهل الخصوصية من أهل الدين يقوم في طهارة القلوب ومراعاة الأسرار والوفاء بالعقود بعد العهود، وحسن الأدب في مواقف الطلب، ومقامات القرب وأوقات الحضور. وهذه المواقف الأخلاقية التي تجسدت في سلوكهم وشعرهم ونثرهم عبّروا عنها بمصطلحات خاصة بهم، فقد وضعوا لمقامات السلوك والأحوال النفسية التي يمرّون بها، وللحب الإلهي وحب النبي (ص) مصطلحات مفهومة فيما بينهم. وهذه المصطلحات هي رموز ذات معنى باطن مخزون تحت كلام ظاهر لا يظفر به إلا أهله. وكان هدفهم منها أولاً الكشف عن معانيها لمريديهم أو لمن يثقون به.
