هذا الكتاب هو خواطر وملاحظات يجمعها شيء واحد هو الفجوة بين القيم وبين الممارسات. إنه محاولة لنقد الذات، وليس لجلد الذات. هو جلد الأخطاء، وبحث عن مجتمع عربي مسلم تسود فيه القيم الأخلاقية، والمهنية، والقانون ، والعمل المؤسسي.
والهدف من الكتاب هو التنبيه إلى خطورة تلك الفجوة، والإسهام في بناء الجسور بين ما نقول وبين ما نعمل، لأن القيم إذا لم تظهر في سلوك الإنسان فإنها تصبح مجرد مادة نظرية للحفظ والخطابة في المناسبات الرسمية وغير الرسمية الأمر الذي يعمق إزدواجية الشخصية العربية.
إن نقد الذات لا يعني أن المجتمعات الأخرى مجتمعات مثالية ولكنها مجتمعات تتطور بسبب نقد الذات، وليس بسبب التفاخر بأمجاد وهمية، وإنجازات كلامية.
وعليه يسلّط هذا الكتاب الضوء على الفجوة بين القيم وبين الممارسات في المجالات المختلفة الدينية، والثقافية، والتربوية، والإدارية، والإعلامية، والسياسية، والرياضية.
والجدير ذكره إن الخلل الذي يتحدث عنه الكتاب هو خلل في التطبيق، وفي الممارسات، وليس في الدين. وهذه حقيقة لا جدال فيها لأن الدين يتضمن مبادىء أخلاقية عظيمة ويتسم بالشمولية، والمسلم يتعلم منذ طفولته أن الإسلام يحث على الصدق، والإخلاص في العمل، والنزاهة، والتعاون، والعدالة، وإتقان العمل، واحترام حقوق الإنسان، وغير ذلك من القيم الإنسانية العظيمة. لكن الممارسات الفعلية في مجالات الحياة المختلفة تقع على مسافة بعيدة من تلك القيم.
