الرسائل التي نقدمها، في هذه الدراسة، ما هي إلا مجموعة صغيرة يبلغ عددها عشرة من رسائل أحمد فارس الشدياق التي كتبها في الفترة ما بين 1847-1869م، والتي تم حفظها في "الأرشيف الوطني التونسي". وهذه الرسائل-لسبب من الأسباب لا نستطيع تحديده تماماً-كانت قد أرسلت إلى شخص واحد من رجالات الحكم المهمّين في القرن التاسع عشر في تونس هو مصطفى خزنه دار، الوزير الأكبر الذي تقلب، منذ لقائه الأول بالشدياق أثناء زيارته لتونس عام 1841م، في مناصب عديدة في عهود ثلاثة من البايات التونسيين، كان آخرها منصب ما يسمى هذه الأيام، في بلاد عربية عديدة، بـ "رئيس الوزراء"، والذي ما زال يسمى في تونس حتى اليوم بـ "الوزير الأول".
ونحاول في هذه الدراسة تقدين أسباب تناولنا عدداً قليلاً من رسائل الشدياق، ولماذا حفظت رسائله المرسلة إلى خزنه دار فقط دون غيره من رجالات الحكومة، والأدب، والعلم الذين كان الشدياق أيضاً على صلات وطيدة ببعضهم. ونفصل في الصفحات التالية البحث عن أهمية هذه الرسائل، كونها تزودنا بمعلومات طريفة عن الشدياق نفسه، وعلاقاته بشخص مصطفى خزنه دار.
كما تزودنا هذه الرسائل بمعلومات تاريخية قيمة عن تلك الحقبة في حياة الشدياق، والأشخاص الذين كان يتقرب إليهم طمعاً في مناصب، أو مال، أو حباً لذاتهم. وإن كانت ظاهرة نشر هذه الرسائل تدل على شيء فإنها تشير إلى أن مثل هذه المواد المكتوبة جد هامة في تبيان معلومات تفيد الباحث، والمؤرخ، والقارئ العادي. وجهدنا المتواضع في هذه الدراسة ما هو إلا جزء من هذه الظاهرة حديثة العهد في اللغة العربية وآدابها بالمقارنة مع آداب الأمم الأوروبية، على سبيل المثال.
وأملنا أن تقدم هذه الدراسة للمهتمين بحياة الشدياق، ذلك الكاتب الرائد في القرن التاسع عشر والمعجمي، والمعلم، والمترجم، والصحفي، وكذلك للمهتمين بتاريخ تونس خاصة، معلومات تتخطى القيود المفروضة على مثل هذه المحفوظات في دور الوثائق.
