الفكر الفلسفي عند العرب شيء له خطورته وعمقه الذي هو بعمق (1400) سنة من التاريخ، وفي أرض مساحتها بقدر مساحة قارة بأكملها مثل أوروبا. ففي كل بقعة من هذه الأرض، وفي كل يوم وعام، يظهر فكر يدعو له أئمة وعلماء وأدباء وخطباء وأصحاب مذاهب وفلاسفة، فكرٌ يتراوح بين الإيمان المطلق والإلحاد المنكر بين الآراء المتطرفة والنظريات الفلسفية وما يتبع ذلك من نظريات الفيض والإشراق وأقوال علم الكلام وأقوال علم الكلام والباطنية والدعوات الغريبة والدخيلة على الإسلام وغير ذلك.
على أية حال إنها أفكار قد لا تبعد عن الفلسفة كثيراً، وما الفلسفة إلاً أفكار في أوّلها ومذاهب ونظريات في آخرها. وقد أوضحتُ ذلك عندما حاولت أن أجمع في هذا الكتاب كل نشاط فكري في المذهب والعقيدة والرأي والجدل والفقه كجوانب من الفكر الفلسفي عند العرب أياً كان نوعه وحجمه واتجاهه ومدة بقائه، وما يشتمل عليه من اعتدال أو تطرّف أو غلوّ أو خروج عن رأي الأكثرية من ذوي الرأي، منذ أول نشوء فكر وعلم لديهم حتى نهاية حضارتهم عندما أخذ ضوء سراجهم الفكري يخبو وينطفئ وعلومهم تتساقط كما يتساقط ورق الخريف.
وموضوع الكتاب شائك وشيّق في الوقت نفسه لأنه يتضمن ما يدور في رأس كل عربي من أفكار وآراء، منذ أن جمع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلّم أهل مكّة وخاطبهم قائلاً: يا أهل قريش إني رسول الله إليكم، فآمن به من آمن وكفر من كفر. منذ ذلك الوقت والأفكار على اختلافها وعلى تناقضها وإردة في هذا لكتاب بصراحة وموضوعية، باعتدالها وسموّ معتقدها من جهة، وبتطرّفها وغلوها وتناقضها من جهة أخرى وحسب تسلسل زمني ثابت، يستأنس بها متتبع الفلسفة ولا ينفر منها متوسط الثقافة.
