إن إختيار موضوع الكتاب يثير إستفهاماً وآخر علنياً حول ما يمكن أن يقال عن الإشتراكية العربية في هذا الزمن بالذات، حيث يتجاوز السياسي النظري وتطرح مهمات وجودية أكثر إلحاحاً تستغرق في الإيديولوجيا فتحجب الإجتماعي أو تبعده على الأقل من مدى الفكر والنظر...
أما التساؤل الضمني فيحدد محاولة البحث عن أصول الإشتراكية "العربية" المعرفية في الإيديولوجية القومية، وكيفية إنتاج هذا المفهوم وأبعاده التاريخية، وأما العلني فيحدد علاقة المفهوم بالمستوى السياسي من جهة، وبالصراع الإيديولوجي الراهن الذي شكلت الإشتراكية، كمفهوم نظري، أحدث أسلحته الرئيسية الأكثر مضاءً من جهة أخرى.
لقد ساهم الصراع السياسي في الشرق العربي في تفجير المشروع القومي باكراً، وارتفعت الأسئلة من موقع الإلتزام، أين يكون الضعف؟ في صياغة المشروع أي في النظرية التي رعت المشروع ورفعت لواءه حلماً للجماهير؟ أم في التطبيق العملي للنظرية حيث إنهارت النظرية تحت ضربات الهزائم المتكررة والتراجعات السياسية المحزنة؟ أين يقع المشروع القومي العربيق في هيمنة السوق الرأسمالي العالمي الذي يضفي بُعداً كونياً ليس على الإقتصاديات المحلية فحسب، بل على العلاقات الإجتماعية والمستويات الفكرية أيضاً؟...
وأن تقع "الخصوصية" العربية في ظل هذه الكونية المهيمنة على العالم؟ وأين يقع الطريق الثالث، وطريقنا الخاص للتطور في ظل الإنشطار المركز للقوى العالمية؟ وأخيراً، أين تقع القضية الفلسطينية التي كانت تحتل موضع القلب في المشروع السياسي القومي، أين تقع الآن في هذا الزمن الواضح لكامب ديفيد، زمن إحتلال بيروت وإخراج الفلسطينيين من بيروت وتشتّتهم في الأرض العربية؟
وهذه المحاولة هي إضافة إلى كل ما سبق، تُعنى بطرح السؤال وبكفية هذا الطرح...
