يعد هذا الكتاب ثمرة بحث أكاديمي توخت صاحبته مقاربة التراث النقدي العربي في عصر إزدهاره، إبان القرنين الثالث والرابع الهجريين من خلال مجموعة من المفاهيم الحديثة: التأويل، التلقي، سلطة اللغة، مفهوم النص... لتكشف على أن الناقد العربي لم تكن وظيفته الفكرية تنحصر في ممارسة التأليف فحسب، وإنما تتجاوزها إلى بناء العالم وإستشراف أدوار المؤلف وأبعادها.
أما المتلقي فقد كان بأصنافه المتعددة عنصراً فاعلاً قد يبلغ تأثيره في فعل التأليف مداه، حينما يسيره ويمضي به حيثما شاء.
بينما خضع مفهوم النص لطبيعة الوجود العربي آنذاك، فجاء مرادفاً لمجموعة من المصطلحات بها يتحدد هذا الوجود، ويتميز عما سواه.
وقد ركزت الدراسة - عن قصد أو بدونه - على الجاحظ والتوحيدي أساساً، لما يطبع إبداعاتهما من قدرة على مجابهة الزمن، فهما معين لا ينضب من الفكر المتجدد قد يشعر قارئ القرن الواحد والعشرين بأنه المقصود بخطابهما، رغم العقود الممتدة التي تفصله عن زمانهما وعصرهما.
