نشأ جيل من طلاب علم الأنثروبولوجيا في الجامعات العربية على مفاهيم ونظريات العلم من مصدراً يكاد يكون وحيداً، ألا وهو المصدر الأنكلو ساكسوني المُتمثل في التقليد الأنثروبولوجي في بريطانيا وأمريكا، وهكذا ظلت بقية المصادر شُبه مغيبة.
الكتاب الحالي ينشد الكشف عن بعض المصادر الأخرى، كتلك المُتمثلة في التقليد الأنثروبولوجي الفرنسي الحديث.
يعالج المؤلف من خلال فصول الكتاب الأربعة إسهامات كلود ليفي ستروس، وذلك بإعتباره أحد أبرز الأنثروبولوجيين الفرنسيين المعاصرين، من خلال تسليط الضوء على إسهاماته في النظرية الأنثروبولوجية عامة ونظرية القرابة خاصة.
الكاتب يعالج كل ذلك عبر الكشف عن السياقات الخاصة بالسيرة الذاتية لكلود ليفي ستروس، وعن بعض تجارب التلقي الأنثروبولوجي لنظرياته في العالم الغربي والعربي معاً.
