إن أعظم الكتب المصنفة في صفاته وأخلاقه وهديه صلى الله عليه وسلم كتاب "الشمائل المحمدية" للإمام الترمذي، وقد تلقاه العلماء بالقبول، فكم من شارح له ومختصر ومحقق وناظم؛ ضبط نصه وشرح غريبه وذكر إختلاف نسخه وتقويم أسانيده، وذلك لأن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يحصل المسلمُ خير الدنيا والآخرة من محبة الله ومغفرته وهدايته وتوفيقه، كما أن في ترك سنته وهديه الفتنة والإختلاف والشر.
وقد اثنى الحافظ ابن كثير في كتابه "البداية والنهاية" على كتاب الشمائل "قد صنف الناس في هذا قديماً وحديثاً، كتباً كثيرة مفردة وغير مفردة، ومن أحسن من جمع في ذلك فأجاد وأفاد الإمام أبو عيسى محمد بن عيسى بن سورة الترمذي".
