وقد توزعت مواضيع الكتاب على بابين، تضمن الباب الأول، (دراسة عن تاريخ وتطور علم الفقه)، تسعة فصول جاءت كما يلي: الفصل الأول: الأدوار التي مر بها الفقه الإمامي، الفصل الثاني: وراثة أئمة الهدى (عليهم السلام) للنبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، الفصل الثالث: استقلال الأئمة (عليهم السلام) وأصحابهم في الفقه، الفصل الرابع: دور التفريع، الفصل الخامس: الركود النسبي للحركة الفكرية في النجف الأشرف، الفصل السادس: استقطاب الحلة للنشاط العلمي، الفصل السابع: الفتح الفكري في إيران، الفصل الثامن: عودة النجف الأشرف الى استقطاب الحركة العلمية، الفصل التاسع: دور التكامل، الفصل العاشر: علم الفقه.
أما الباب الثاني: دراسة عن تاريخ وتطور أصول الفقه، فتضمن خمسة فصول ألحقت بخاتمة وملحق، حيث جاءت عناوين الفصول وفق ما يلي: الفصل الأول: دور التأسيس، الفصل الثاني: دور النضج، الفصل الثالث: الحركة الاخبارية، الفصل الرابع: جهود الوحيد البهبهاني العلمية، الفصل الخامس: أهم الكتب الأصولية المتداولة.
