يتناول هذا الكتاب العمل العام والعمل التطوعي ويبحر المؤلف في العمل التطوعي بشكل احترافي تفصيلاً وتأصيلاً في أهميته ، وأسسه ومقوماته ، ومبادئه ،وأشكاله، وفوائده ، وثمراته ، وآلياته ، ومهاراته ، وقيمه والعقبات التي تعترض طريقه ، والمرأة والتطوع ، ثم يقف وقفة مع المتطوعين يغو ص بها في أعماقهم ذاكراً هناك نماذج حية مثل هذه التجربة التي عايشها مؤلف هذا الكتاب ، وهناك تجارب متعددة في شتى أرجاء مصر كـ جمعية لمسة خير للأعمال الخيرية ذلك النموذج الشبابي الراقي الرائع ، وعم ظاظا ، وطبيب الغلابة ، وعربة الحواديت ، وشاهبندر التجار ، غيث ، مذيع الشارع ، بل هناك تجربة انفردت بها محافظة الشرقية وسبقت غيرها وهى تجربة البسايسة التي عمرها تجاوز الأربعين عاماً وصاحبها الدكتور / صلاح عرفة أستاذ العلوم بالجامعة الأمريكية الذي استطاع أن يقيم مجتمعاً تعاونياً بين الأفراد والمؤسسات داخل مجتمعات صغيرة نسبياً وحقق عرفة نموذجاً متكاملاً للقرية المصرية التي تستطيع الاعتماد علي نفسها والاستخدام الأمثل لمواردها من خلال مشروعات صغيرة للطاقة الشمسية وتدوير المخلفات بغرض إنتاج الغاز والكهرباء إضافة إلي مشروع التعليم الشعبي الذي استطاع من خلاله القضاء علي الأمية داخل قرية البسايسة والبطالة أيضاً.
