يفترض الباحث الظاهرة الطللية تمظهراً للثنائية الضدية التي تتجلى في الأدب العربي مما قاده إلى التعريف أولاً بهذه الظاهرة ومن ثم مراقبتها في النص العربي، وتمظهرها المختلف باختلاف الزمن. حيث وقع اختياره أولاً على نص من العصر الجاهلي للأخنس التغلبي، وثانياً من العصر الإسلامي نصاً قرآنياً، لأن القرآن، أدبياً، يشكل ظاهرة تعبيرية متميزة. أما من العصر العباسي فقد وقع اختيار الباحث على نص شائع لأبي نواس.
أما المنهج الذي يعتمده في معاينة هذه النصوص، فهو يقوم على اعتماد النص بنية تنطوي على ظواهر أسلوبية، يجري رصدها ووصفها وتقديمها على أنها بمقتضى فكرة أو معنى كامن يعتمل في ذات المبدع. يقوم هذا المنهج بتحليل المركبات البنيوية تحليلاً لغوياً يقف على مقتضى التركيب ذاك بحسب علم النمو، منطلقاً في ذلك من نظرة عبد القاهر الجرجاني إلى التركيب أن يقول: "إن الألفاظ إذا كانت أوعية للمعاني فإنها لا محالة تتبع المعاني في مواضعها. فإذا وجب لمعنى أن يكون أولاً في النفس وجب للفظ الدال عليه أن يكون مثله أولاً في المنطق".
وهناك مسألة تجدر الإشارة إليها في هذا السياق، وهي أن التحليل للنصوص ليس له غاية من وراء الكشف عن مكامن الإبداع، سوى الكشف عن تجليات الرؤية التي تطرأ عليها في السيرورة الزمنية الخاضعة للمؤتمرات العامة التي تؤثر في بنية الأدب بشكل عام.
