يُجمع الباحثون في مجال التنمية الإقتصادية، أن التنمية هدف مستمر وقدرة متواصلة على التطور والنماء والإرتقاء، تتداخل فيها أبعاد عديدة متفاعلة ومتشابكة مع بعضها البعض، فلا يمكن تصوّر تنمية إقتصادية مع وجود تخلّف سياسي أو إداري أو ثقافي أو تقني. وفي عالم اليوم، نجد أن النقطة الرئيسية التي تدور حولها الدراسات التنموية هي البحث عن الآليات والإستراتيجيات الكفيلة ببعث روح النمو داخل إقتصاديات البلدان النامية، مما يحقق إزدهارها الإقتصادي واستمرار التنمية فيها بشكل ذاتي متجدد. وبهذا يكون إقتصاد التنمية ملتقى للعديد من التخصصات العلمية، ويتنوع فيه الطرح والأفكار في معالجة القضايا التي يدرسها.
يشكل كتاب (دراسات في التنمية الإقتصادية) مبادىء ومنطلقات أساسية في هذا الفرع العلمي الحديث من الإقتصاد، وقد توزع على خمسة فصول:
يتطرق الفصل الأول إلى مفهوم التنمية وما يرتبط به من متعلقات، كضبط مفهومها ومراحل تطوره، وبيان خصائصها وجوانبها وأهدافها ومحدداتها وأركانها، ومؤشرات قياسها. ويهتم الفصل الثاني بعرض أهم النظريات التنموية، ومختلف السياسات التي طبقت كحلول للخروج من التخلف في الدول النامية، مع تقديم تقييم عام لهذه النظريات والسياسات التنموية. ويتعرض الفصل الثالث لمختلف النقاشات العلمية التي تمس بعض القضايا الأساسية في إقتصاد التنمية، كالتعليم، والعلاقة بين السكان والتنمية والزراعة، ودور الدولة في الإقتصاد، وإقتصاد المعرفة، والتنمية المستدامة ... الخ. وخصص الفصل الرابع لقضية تمويل التنمية الإقتصادية وبيان مختلف الجوانب المرتبطة به. ويأتي الفصل الخامس والأخير بمثابة تسليط للضوء على مجموعة الدول النامية، ببيان مفهومها وتصنيفاتها، وخصائصها العامة، مع بيان التفاوت التنموي بين دول هذه المجموعة، وكذا مختلف العوائق التي تقف وراء تأخرها الإقتصادي.
