يتناول هذا الكتاب دراسة التطور التاريخي للفكر الإنساني في المجال الاقتصادي بجوانبه الثلاثة على مر العصور ، ينسحب الجانب الأول إلى النطاق النظري للدراسة ونعني بذلك البحث في القوانين التى تحكم العلاقات بينالطواهر أو المشكلات الاقتصادية الأربع، المعروفة في الادبيات الاقتصادية، ألا وهى :الانتاج ، التوزيع التبادل والاستهلاك أو ما يطلق عليها التحليل الاقتصادي ، أو " النظرية الاقتصادية" أما الجانب الثاني لدراسة تطور الفكر الاقتصادي فإنه يتعلق بالسياسة الاقتصادية التى تنبني على التحليل العلمي في ضوء ما تسفر عنه النظرية الاقتصادية من نتائج حول طبيعة العلاقات بين الظواهر أو المشكلات الاقتصادية وأما الجانب الثالث للدراسة فإنه يتناول النظام الاقتصادي السائد في المجتمع من حيث المذهب الذي يقوم عليه هذا النظام باعتباره الإطار المؤسسي الذي يمارس أفراد هذا المجتمع من خلاله نشاطهم الاقتصادي في شتى المجالات .
