الاصمعي (122 - 216 هـ = 740 - 831 م)
عبد الملك بن قريب بن علي بن أصمع الباهلي، أبو سعيد الأصمعي: راوية العرب، وأحد أئمة العلم باللغة والشعر والبلدان.
نسبته إلى جده أصمع.
ومولده ووفاته في البصرة.
كان كثير التطواف في البوادي، يقتبس علومها ويتلقى أخبارها، ويتحف بها الخلفاء، فيكافأ عليها بالعطايا الوافرة.
أخباره كثيرة جدا.
وكان الرشيد يسميه «شيطان الشعر».
قال الأخفش: ما رأينا أحدا أعلم بالشعر من الأصمعي.
وقال أبو الطيب اللغوي: كان أتقن القوم للغة، وأعلمهم بالشعر، وأحضرهم حفظا.
وكان الأصمعي يقول: أحفظ عشرة آلاف أرجوزة.
وتصانيفه كثيرة، منها «الإبل - ط» و «الأضداد - ط» مشكوك في أنه من تأليفه و «خلق الإنسان - ط» و «المترادف - خ»
و «الفرق - ط» أي الفرق بين أسماء الأعضاء من الإنسان والحيوان، و «الخليل - ط» و «الشاء - ط» و «الدارات - ط» و «شرح ديوان ذي الرمة - خ» في 45 ورقة، في خزانة الرباط (1002 د) و «الوحوش وصفاتها - خ» في مكتبة الدراسات العليا ببغداد (992 / 2) و «النبات والشجر - ط» وللمستشرق الألماني وليم أهلورد Vilhelm Ahlwardt كتاب سماه «الأصمعيات - ط» جمع فيه بعض القصائد التي تفرد الأصمعي بروايتها.
وأعاد أحمد محمد شاكر وعبد السلام هارون طبعها، ومحققة مشرحة، وسمياها «اختيار الأصمعي» ولعبد الجبار الجومرد، كتاب «الأصمعي حياته وآثاره - ط» ولعبدا لله بن أحمد الربعي كتاب «المنتقى من أخبار الأصمعي - ط» غير تام .

"ما عبّر أحد عن العرب بأحسن من عبارة الأصمعي" لقد كان عالماً تحريراً لا يقبل غير الثابت الصحيح، ولا يأخذ إلا ما أجمع عليه علماء اللغة أو فصحاء العرب، وهذا الكتاب عقد لؤلؤ جديد من عقود الأصمعي، وما أكثرها. وقد جمع لآلئه من بحر اللغة العربية الزاخر فضمها إلى بعضها فسلكها عقداً دون نظام معين، فلم يصنفها أنواعاً، وإنما قصُر جهده على الجمع بين المفردات من الألفاظ. لذلك لم يقسم الكتاب أبواباً، وإنما كان ينتقل فيه من أسماء مترادفة إلى أفعال مترادفة، وبالعكس، ومن صفات تتعلق بالإنسان إلى أخرى تتعلق بالحيوان، ومن أسماء تدل على الحسن إلى أخرى تدل على القبح، ومن أفعال فيها مدح إلى أفعال فيها ذم. لذلك جاء الكتاب معجم معان صغير الحجم عظيم النفع، تسهل معرفة ما فيه بالرجوع إلى فهرس ألفاظه.
