راح الشاعر العربي، في القرن العشرين، يعالج مشاكل الإنسانية جمعاء، وقد سخر نفسه كي يكون المؤمن بالقيم الروحية الصادرة من القلوب البشرية، وكي يكون ناشر هذه القيم في ثنايا شعره. من هنا، القصائد اتسمت بالوحدة في الموضوع، الحرية في الإخراج، والانطلاق في رحاب الإنسانية والتفلت من القيود، والتجديد في الأساليب متخطية الحواس، متأملة في الموضوعات المعنوية المجردة.
فالأدب الخالد هو الأدب العالمي الذي يعالج الموضوعات الروحية والإنسانية التي يشعر بها كل إنسان في كل زمان ومكان، وما سواه فهو أدب متغير، غير ثابت، يتطور بتطور البيئة، وانتقال العصر. والأدب الذي يحملنا على أجنحته ويرفعنا إلى ما وراء المادة وهو الأدب الصحيح الذي يتغنى دوماً بقلب الإنسانية، فيشارك كل إنسان ذلك الغناء الأزلي.
أما الشاعر فهو في طليعة أصحاب الآراء المستقلة الحرة، لأنه ابن الإنسانية درجة الهناءة الروحية والسعادة الدائمة. أما الشاعر، فهو صاحب الروحي القدسية والرسالة الإنسانية الهادفة إلى تجريد المادة، والتأمل فيها ليرفع النفوس الصغيرة، ويمنحها إيماناً وسحراً، ويقدم للنفوس الكبيرة نشوة وغبطة. في هذه المناخات تأتي هذه الدراسة التي تتناول بالبحث والتدقيق والتحليل تلك القيم العليا التي يفترض بالشاعر أن يطرحها في شعره، مساهمة منه في عملية التربية الأخلاقية المتعلقة بأعماق الروح الإنسانية وتعلق هذه الأعماق بالفكر المعتمد على العقل الذي لا ينافي، في حال من الأحوال، التربية الأخلاقية الروحية، بل يدعها حتى يكمّل الجزءُ الجزءَ الآخر، فتبدو الأفكار واضحة جلية.
