"يبدو أنّني كنت في غيبوبة؟ لم أتمكن بعد من تحديد ما جرى لي، ولا حتى أين أنا، ولماذا أنا قابع هنا في هذا الكهف العاري؟ كما أنني لم أتمكّن من تحديد كم استغرق ذلك من وقت، ربما يومًا، أو يومَيْن، أو أكثر، لا أدري؟ فكل الذي ما زال عالقاً في ذهني، ذلك الصوت الرهيب، الذي اخترق جدار الصمت من حولنا على حين غرة، انتابني سعال شديد على هيئة نوبات، كانت نوبات متتالية وعميقة، شعرت على أثرها بضيق شديد في التنفس، كاد أن يغمى عليّ مرة أخرى، اتكأت على جانبي الأيمن على الفور، شعرت بعدها بالغثيان، أمعائي الخاوية كادت تخرج من فمي، رافق ذلك بعض الألم في نواح عديدة من جسدي، وعلى أثر ذلك شعرت ببعض الارتياح، يبدو أنَّ السعال الشديد ساهم في تنظيف مجاري الرئة من الإفرازات اللزجة التي تراكمت خلال فترة الغيبوبة، تجمد اللعاب في حلقي، لقد فقدت القدرة على بلعه، ألقيت نظرة سريعة على المكان من حولي، علني أحظى ببعض الماء هنا أو هناك، لكن دون جدوى، فهم يبعدون الماء عن الجرحى بحكم العادة ربما، وربما لشأن آخر ما زلت اجهل أسبابه حتى الآن؟"
