ما دلالة فعل المقارنة في مجال العلوم الإجتماعية؟ ينظر إلى نهج المقارنة، في هذا المجلد، على أنه بمثابة مديح للتعددية، بحيث يستحيل على أي فرع من العلوم الإجتماعية الإقتصار على دراسة حالة واحدة وحسب.
وبسبب ذلك، تجد كل معرفة جديدة، وكل مبادلة جديدة بين فرعين علميين، نفسها في مواجهة البدهيات المغلوطة حول عدم إنعكاسيتها، هناك ميل لإعلان ما يقبل المقارنة، وإشتراط لما لا يقبلها، كونها لا تعني، في العلوم الإجتماعي، الرد على التحديات المتمثلة في تقسيماتها وعدم تناظر موضوعاتها، كما أنها تعني صنع الأدوات التي تقتضيها منهجية متلائمة مع الفروق الموجودة.
يعكس هذا الكتاب المقاربات البالغة الإختلاف التي تندرج المقارنة ضمنها، إذ ثمة من يرى في هذه الأخيرة مورداً للتحليل؛ في حين يرى آخرون أنها مادة لبرنامج بحث، في الحصيلة، يرى الجميع في المقارنة الإطار النظري لإنعكاسيتهم العلمية، كما تحدّد أيضاً أفقاً للغة المشتركة، وتحدّد أخيراً الموضوع المطروح تحت المراقبة المتمثل بالمجتمعات المكونة من فاعلين لا ينفكون عن توصيف وضعيتهم بها.
