نظراً لأهمية مبادئ أنظمة التشغيل للجميع وخاصة طلبة الجامعات، لذا جاء هذا الكتاب ليكون مصدراً جامعاً لأهم مفاهيم أنظمة التشغيل، ويهدف هذا الكتاب إلى عرض جميع الأفكار المتعلقة بأنظمة التشغيل والذي يعتبر الأساس الأول في عمل الحاسبات، ومن خلال الإلمام بمفاهيم أنظمة التشغيل يستطيع مستخدمي الحاسبات معرفة الكثير من الوظائف التي تؤديها الحاسبة وبذلك يكون مطلعاً على العمل الداخلي لنظام الحاسبة.
يقع هذا الكتاب في اثني عشر فصلاً، يتضمن الفصل الأول مقدمة عامة ونظرة تاريخية عن مبادئ نظم التشغيل، ويتطرق الفصل الثاني إلى تركيبات أنظمة التشغيل، أما الفصل الثالث فيتناول مفاهيم الماديات والبرمجيات، ويتناول الفصل الرابع مفاهيم البرنامج التنفيذي ويتضمن إحدى الأفكار الأساسية في أنظمة التشغيل وهي عمليات وأنواع القطع والتطرق إلى الحالات الأساسية للبرنامج التنفيذي، ويتناول الفصل الخامس أفكار التزامن والتعاون، أما الفصل السادس فيتناول مشكلة كبيرة وهي مشكلة القفل المميت إضافة إلى مشكلة التأجيل غير المحدد والطرق الضرورية لمنع ومعالجة هذه المشاكل.
ويتطرق الفصلين السابع والثامن إلى الخزن الحقيقي والخزن الإفتراضي وفوائد ومساوئ كل من الأسلوبين، أما الفصل التاسع فيختص بإستراتيجيات جدولة المعالج والبرنامج وأثرها في أنظمة المشاركة الزمنية، ويتناول الفصل العاشر مبادئ وأداء القرص الثانوي، ويتطرق الفصل الحادي عشر إلى مفاهيم الملفات وقواعد البيانات وكيفية تنظيم كل منهما في أنظمة الحاسبات، أما الفصل الأخير وهو الفصل الثاني عشر فيتناول أهم المبادئ في الحاسبات الحديثة وهو حماية المعلومات لأثرها الكبير في إيجاد وسائل هامة ونافعة من محاولات الأعداء.
