لقد ارتبط تاريخ معاهد العلم الإسلامية ارتباطًا وثيقًا بالتاريخِ الديني للإسلام. كما ارتبطت نشأة هذه المعاهد بالتفاعل الذي جرى بين هذه الحركات الدينية؛ الفقهية منها والكلامية.
وهذا الكتاب لا يقدِّمُ استعراضًا إجماليًا للتربية الإسلامية، بل يُحاول التركيز على مؤسَّسَة تعليمية بعينها، وهي الكليَّة الإسلامية، خاصة في الشكل الذي اتخذته هذه الكليَّة، وهو "المدرسة". كما يُركِّزٌ على "طريقة النظر" التي كانت نتاجَ هذه المؤسَّسّةِ التعليمية. وينصبُّ الاهتمام الأكبر في هذه الدراسة على القرنِ الرابع الهجري، الموافق للقرن الحادي عشر الميلادي، في بغداد، وهما يُمثِّلانِ الزمان والمكان اللذين ازدهرت فيهما المدرسة وطريقة النظر، مع أنَّ نشأة كليهما تعودُ إلى القرن السابق لذلك. وذلك برغم ما يحفّلُ به الكتاب من إشاراتٍ فتراتٍ زمنيةأخرى غير تلك الفترة، وأماكن أخرى غير بغداد. والهدف من وراء ذلك هو إثباتُ أن المدرسة التي تجسَّدت فيها العلوم الدينية الإسلامية في أكمل صورها وهي الفقه، كما برز فيها الاتجاه الديني الأمثل في الإسلام، وهو الاتجاه السلفي، وأنَّ الفقه والاتجاه السلفي تضافرا معًا لإحداثِ طريقة النظر أو الطريقة المدرسية، التي كانت ابتكارًا فريدًا تميَّزت به العصور الوسطى.
