هناك أمران أساسيان يتمحور حولهما هذا الكتاب وهما: أولاً، أن مبادئ الحق والعدالة والمساواة والحرية والمسؤولية، لا تنفصل بوصفها قضايا إتيقية - سياسية، عن تفكيرنا في ذواتنا وفي علاقاتنا بالآخرين، أي أنها وثيقة الصلة بقضايا الحوار والتواصل والتفاعل داخل المجتمعات وفي ما بينها.
ثانياً، إن إستنبات هذه المبادئ وترسيخها في مجتمعنا، يتطلبان سياسة تعليمية تهيء الأجيال لمواجهة مشاكل الحاضر والمستقبل بوعي ومسؤولية.
وما يوحد نصوص هذا الكتاب، هو الإقرار بأن قضايا الإتيقا والتواصل والترجمة والتعليم سياسية في جوهرها، بحيث يأخذ مفهوم السياسة هنا مدلوله الشامل الذي يعني تدبير الشأن العام بمختلف تجلياته، من منطلق أن "الإنسان حيوان سياسي" حسب التعبير المأثور لأرسطو.
