" يوجد التباس بخصوص فهم معنى الحداثة، حيث يتم في غالب الأحيان، الخلط بين "الحداثة" و"التحديث" والحال أنهما غير متطابقين ولا يحملان نفس المعنى. وهو ما انتبه إليه العديد من الدارسين لهذه الظاهرة، وقدموا في ضوء ذلك، تحديدات إجرائية تقترح نماذج منها لكل من جورج بلانديي، محمد أركون وعبد الله العروي.فقد أشار الأنثروبولوجي الفرنسي جورج بلانديي إلى أن أغلب الدراسات في مجال العلوم الاجتماعية ركزت على موضوعة التحديث أكثر من اهتمامها بموضوعة الحداثة. ولم تسمح هذه الدراسات على كثرتها بإزالة الخلط الذي يشوب استعمال الكلمتين. هكذا يستخدم لفظ الحداثة لوصف الخصائص المشتركة بين الدول المتقدمة على المستوى الاقتصادي والاجتماعي والسياسي، ويستعمل لفظ التحديث لوصف العلميات التي يتم بواسطتها اكتساب هذه الخصائص. فهو سياق التحول التكنولوجي والاقتصادي الذي يتحدد عبر إدخال التقنية والمخترعات الحديثة إلى مجتمع ما. أما المفكر الجزائري محمد أركون، فقد اعتبر الحداثة موقفاً للروح أمام مشكلة المعرفة أي أمام كل المناهج التي يستخدمها العقل للتوصل إلى معرفة ملموسة للواقع، أما التحديث فهو مجرد إدخال للتقنية والمخترعات الحديثة، بالمعنى الزمني للكلمة، إلى الساحة العربية والإسلامية. والمقصود بذلك، إدخال آخر المخترعات الغربية الاستهلاكية وإجراء تحديث شكلي أو خارجي لا يرافقه أي تغيير جذري في موقف العربي والمسلم من الكون والعالم.ومن جهته، لخص المفكر المغربي عبد الله العروي هذا الوضع الملتبس، مستشهداً بحالة المجتمعات والدول المغاربية. فقد أقر بأن الحداثة هي عملية غير مكتملة -وهذا يذكرنا بالفكرة المركزية لهابرماس في الموضوع، والتي مفادها أن الحداثة مشروع لم يكتمل بعد- وبأنها تتضمن مجموعة من الخصائص التي تميز المجتمعات الحداثية عن غيرها (المجتمعات التقدلية أو ما قبل الحداثية). وسيضيف العروي قائلاً، إننا إذا ما سألنا مؤرخاً أو عالم اجتماع أو مهندساً عن الحداثة، فإنه لم يجيبنا على الأرجح، أما إذا طلبنا منه معلومات حول كيفية جعل الفلاحة تنافسية والتعليم أكثر مردودية والمدن أحسن تهيئة، فإنه سيكون مستعداً لتقديمها".
