اللغة الآرامية من اللغات السامية، كالعربية، والعبرية، والفينيقية ... وبقيت هذه اللغة من القرن السادس قبل الميلاد حتى القرن السابع بعده اللغة السامية الوحيدة - إن استثنينا اللغة العربية - ترجماناً للأعراب عن آراء الساميين والتعبير عن أفكارهم في غضون إثني عشر قرناً.
يأتي هذا الكتاب من ضمن سلسلة مقالات كان قد نشرها يوسف غنيمة في مجلة "لغة العرب" سنة (1926م) وفيه لا يتعرض للألفاظ الآرامية الأصل التي دخلت في اللغة العربية الفصحى منذ القدم، وإنما يقتصر في (مقاله) على الألفاظ الآرامية البحتة التي يستعملها العراقيون بمعانيها الأصلية ولا يعرفون حقيقتها، إذ لا يتمكنون من الوقوف عليها في المعاجم العربية لخلوها منها. ولأنه لا يوجد في مطبعة "لغة العرب" حروف آرمية، كتب المؤلف أصول تلك الكلمات بحروف عربية منفصلة، كما سيرى القارىء.
ويذكر المؤلف أن حروف الأبجدية الآرمية إثنان وعشرون على ترتيب حروف الجمل العربية، إلا أن في لغتنا (العربية) سبعة حروف لا مقابل لها في اللغة الآرمية، وهي: ج (لأن جيم (أبجد) عندهم تلفظ كافاً فارسية) ث ، خ ، ذ ، ض ، ظ ، غ ؟ وهذه الحروف يعتاض عنها في الآرامية بوضع نقط على ما يقابلهم من حروفهم.
ولهذا يسير المؤلف في كتابه هذا (مقاله) على ترتيب الحروف الأبجدية نظراً إلى أصلها الآرمي، ليسهل التنقيب على الذين يريدون الإطلاع على المفردات في المعاجم الآرمية ويبدأ الكتاب بحرف الألف وينتهي بالياء مع تضمين كل مفردة الشرح المناسب.
