ظهر الآراميون في التاريخ منذ الألف الثالث قبل الميلاد كأقوام رجل ثم أخذت تتوضح معالمهم وتترسخ قدمهم، لا سيما منذ منتصف الألف الثاني، حيث شكلوا دويلات صغيرة انتشرت في أعالي سوريا وما بين النهرين، ونزحت فئات منهم إلى جنوب البلاد البابلية-الكلدانية.
وبلغت هذه الدويلات ذروة مجدها وقوتها السياسية في القرنين الحادي عشر والعاشر قبل الميلاد، حينما دبّ الخمول في الامبراطورية الآشورية. إلا أن القرنين التاسع والثامن شهدا انتفاض قوتهم السياسية، إذ استعاد الآشوريون بأسهم وراحوا يدكون معاقل الآراميين الواحد تلو الآخر، ويبدّدون شملهم ويقضون على أحلافهم.
ولكن ما يدعو إلى الدهشة هو أن نهاية استقلال الدويلات الآرامية السياسي كانت بداية انطلاقة جديدة للغتهم، إذ أخذت تنتشر انتشاراً سريعاً بين المستعمرين أنفسهم، وصارت تحتل المكانة الأولى بين سائر اللغات في العلاقات الدولية. وقد حافظت هذه اللغة على نفوذها زمناً طويلاً، وتسابق كتّابها فيا لتعبير عما تمخضت عنه عبقريتهم من شتى العلوم.
وقد عرف المستشرقون هذه اللغة وما في الكنوز والنفائس، فأقبلوا عليها يستطلعون معالمها ويسجلون خفاياها ويتذوقون روائعها. مما دفع أبناء هذه اللغة إلى التأليف في تاريخ هذه اللغة وآدابها وعلومها. وكتاب أدب اللغة الآرامية الذي نقلب صفحاته يأتي في هذا الإطار حيث يتابع المؤلف مسيرة تلك اللغة: تاريخها، نشأتها، وتطورها وأهم مراحل حياتها ليتبع ذلك بتاريخ موجز للأب الآرامي يشمل نشأته وتطوره وازدهاره ومراحله الشاقة ونهضته.
