تشمل هذه الدراسة على إضاءة الجوانب السياسية والإقتصادية لدولة كانم الإسلامية إحدى كيانات السودان الأوسط في المدة الممتدة من القرن الخامس للهجرة / الحادي عشر الميلادي وحتى نهاية القرن الثامن للهجرة/ الرابع عشر الميلادي، ورغم إتساع المدة الزمنية للبحث إلا أنها تمثل مرحلة مستقلة قائمة بذاتها يصعب فلها أو تجزئتها نظراً لقلة المادة التاريخية عن بلاد السودان عموماً.
ولا شك بأن هذه المدة تعد من أخصب فترات التاريخ الإفريقي حيث شهدت فيها تلك القارة قيام عدة كيانات إسلامية أقامها أهل السودان وكان الدين الإسلامي عماد إزدهارها وقوتها، أما اللغة العربية فيها فكانت أداة الثقافة، والإدارة، والتجارة، فعن طريق الإسلام والإندماج الطوعي في المجتمع الإسلامي سارت هذه البلاد في طريق الحضارة والتقدم والرقي.
من هنا، تبرز أهمية دراسة دولة كانم الإسلامية لقلة ما هو مكتوب عنها في اللغة العربية، فضلاً عن الحاجة الملحة إلى إبراز تاريخها السياسي والإقتصادي في ظل المحاولات الإستعمارية الرامية إلى قطع الصلة، والتواصل الحضاري بين المسلمين والسودان من خلال تشويه ومصادرة التاريخ الإفريقي في أزهى فتراته.
وتقع هذه الدراسة في خمسة فصول: أما الفصل الأول: وهو فصل تمهيدي، خصص لدراسة (الأرض والسكان) وبحث فيه الإطار الجغرافي الذي شمل على التعريف بالحدود السياسة لدولة كانم، وتسميتها، وجغرافيتها، أما الفصل الثاني: فيبحث في ظهور ونشأة الدولة، كما فيه تتبع لعملية إنتشار الإسلام فيها، والعوامل التي ساعدت على إنتشاره، أما الفصل الثالث: فقد خصص للبحث عن العلاقات الخارجية التي كانت تربط دولة كانم الإسلامية بالدول الإسلامية في المغرب العربي، ومصر، فضلاً عن العلاقات المحلية التي كانت تربطها بجيرانها من دول وأمم السودان.
وخصص الفصل الرابع: للبحث عن جوانب الحياة الإقتصادية لهذه الدولة، أما الفصل الخامس والأخير: فيتناول أهم عوامل الضعف التي إنتابت دولة كانم منذ نهاية القرن السابع للهجرة/ الثالث عشر الميلادي والتي أدت إلى إنحسار دورها السياسي.
