يعترف المؤلف بأنه أتى متأخراً إلى الإيمان الكاثوليكي، وأنه كان يشعر بقدوم كارثة يغرق فيها كل من أحب، يقول: كنت أقول لنفسي: ليس هناك ما يمنع حدوث ما هو بنظرنا الأسوأ. وعندئذ بدأت بسؤال نفسي: ماذا أصبح إيماني؟ أكنت لم أعد أشعر به، وكان يبدو لي يفقد الحياة إلى حد التحوّل إلى نوع من "الرأي" كنت أعلم انتماءه إلى عتادي العقلي، ليس أكثر ...".
