في هذا الكتاب يبحث الفيلسوف الفرنسي الوجودي "غبريال مارسيل" في سلسلة من الخطوات المترابطة عقلياً عن التجربة المشتركة للبشرية، متسائلاً عن شبكة الاتصالات التي تربط افكارنا كبشر بعضها ببعض ونقلها إلى ميدان واحد نمارس فيه سيطرتنا بسهولة متزايدة ومن جهة ثانية يتساءل عن الرغبة في جعل فكرنا أكثر قابلية للنقل، وفي أن نراه يتجسَم في كلٍ يمكننا اعتباره كلنا كما هي الحال بالنسبة لموضوع أو لخاصية معينتين.
إذاً تبحث فاسفة غبريال مارسيل في الماورائيات من خلال دراستها للفعل الإنساني، فهو يفكر بتعمق في وضعنا ككائنات حية موجودة ومفكرة، وهذا يعني برأيه أننا ملزمون بالتساؤل عماَ إذا كان هذا الوضع بالذات يسمح بالفعل الذي به " يزعم الماورائي أنه ينتقل إلى قلب الكائن أو يعثر على الفعل الأوَلي الذي به يرتبط في الوقت نفسه كائني وكائن العالم" وبهذا يكون هذا الفيلسوف في سعيه الماورائي نحو اكتشاف المطلق والذي يصوره مثل "مرصد مركزي يتأمل الكون بكليَته، بدل أن يتناول جزئياً وسطحياً، كما هي الحال مع كل منا". "غبريال وبهذا يكون مارسيل" يبحث في المتناقضات، ويرفد دراسته بنظريات "لافيل" و "كارل ياسبرز" و"هايدغر" وغيرهم من أتباع المذاهب العقلانية الكبرى وهو يربط نظريته باستنتاجاتهم فيما يختص عملية الخلق...
