هذه الحكايات الشعبية مبنية على فلكلور سكان (جولد كوست)، أي جمهورية (غانا) حالياً، وتمتد من استعمار بريطانيا لها عام 1821م حتى استقلالها عام 1957م، وقد اختيرت بعناية لتقدم للقارئ تعريفاً بأفكار زنوج غرب أفريقيا وعاداتهم. والعديد من حكايات "أنانسي" أو "العنكبوت" وهي القسم الأول من هذه المجموعة، تروى حتى اليوم من ملاحظة وسائل العنكبوت وخصائصه الفريدة، فهو مخلوق حكيم وماكر في آن معاً، أما القسم الثاني (حكايات متنوعة)فيقدم تفسيرات عفوية لممارسة ثقافية أو بيولوجية أو سلوك بشري أو حيواني، من دون أن يخفى تشابهها المذهل مع ما في الأساطير الأوروبية أو حكايات الجنيات.
