كرس هذا الكتاب "السومريون" للأستاذ صموئيل نوح كريمر لدراسة تاريخ الشعب السومري الحضاري والسياسي، ذلك الشعب العبقري الذي كان له الفضل الأول في نقل الإنسان من عصور البربرية إلى عصور التمدن، بكل ما توحى به عبارة "تمدن" من معان إنسانية سامية، ولم تكن الكتابة إنجاز هذا الشعب الوحيد، وإن كانت هي أهم إنجازته، حيث وضع هذا الشعب أسس كل مظهر من مظاهر الحياة المتطورة، فهو الذي شرع أولى القوانين حماية لحقوق الفرد ومنعاً للتجاوز عليها، وهو الذي أسس أول مدرسة لأنه أدرك أهمية التربية والتعليم، وكان أول من اهتم بالطب وأول من وضع دستوراً للأدوية خالياً من الشعوذة وأعمال السحر.
وكان أول من فكر بالكون في محاولة للكشف عن خفايا الطبيعة وأسرارها، وكان أول شعب مارس الديمقراطية المستندة إلى مجلسين: مجلس من العامة وآخر للشيوخ، وهي، وإن كانت ديمقراطية "بدائية"، إلا أنها لا تخلو من دلالات هامة بالنسبة للعلاقة بين الحاكم والمحكوم قبل أكثر من خمسة آلاف عام.
والأستاذ كريمر ليس جديداً على القارئ العربي المتتبع للدراسات القديمة، فقد ترجم من مؤلفاته إلى اللغة العربية حتى الآن كتابان: "من ألواح سومر" و"الأساطير السومرية".
وبين يدينا كتابه الثالث الذي يعتبر أفضل ما كتب عن السومريين وحضارتهم حتى الآن، حيث يلقى الضوء على أروع قصة من قصص تطور الإنسان ومسيرته الطويلة في طريق التقدم والإزدهار والإرتقاء.
